Dr John Hinds Scholarship Award Winner Announced

| Galen | News

Craigavon, U.K. – 18 May 2021 - The College of Paramedics, in association with Galen, the privately owned pharmaceutical sales and marketing company, is proud to announce the winner of the Dr John Hinds Scholarship Award 2021: Edel Mullen of National Ambulance Service in Ireland.

As this year’s winner, Edel, who is a paramedic in the North Leinster area, will now take up a fully funded place on the much-coveted Anaesthesia Trauma and Critical Care (ATACC) course, broadly accepted as the most advanced trauma course available worldwide.

To qualify for the annual scholarship, entrants were required to write a case study, written to protect patient confidentiality, using original text and including all appropriate references.

When told about her win, Edel said: “I have always had a passion for first aid, and through volunteer work with a local rescue group, I was able to expand my knowledge in first aid and patient care. From there, I pursued a career in Pre-Hospital Emergency Care and recently qualified as a paramedic. John Hinds’ name is mentioned frequently and now to receive the award named after him is such a great honour. I am really looking forward to having the opportunity to attend the ATACC course.”

The Dr John Hinds Scholarship is presented in memory of the late Dr John Hinds who was regarded as an inspirational leader by paramedics and emergency medical technicians, and indeed, by anyone with an interest in pre-hospital care across Ireland. A world-renowned critical care physician from Northern Ireland, Dr Hinds, whose untimely death occurred six years ago on 4th July 2015, selflessly gave a huge amount of his own time to educating and supporting paramedics and ambulance staff in his homeland.

Dr Dennise Broderick, Galen’s Managing Director & President stated, “This award highlights the crucial work undertaken by paramedic professionals right across Ireland and their ongoing commitment to providing critical care to patients despite the challenges faced throughout the pandemic. Galen is extremely proud to, once again, provide our support for this annual award and I would like to offer my congratulations to Edel as she advances her expertise and gains access to a highly coveted training programme.”

A member of the Hinds family commented: “It gives us, as a family, such comfort and pride that the Dr John Hinds scholarship award continues to inspire and educate our current paramedics and first responders. John had such enthusiasm for sharing knowledge and passing on his expertise so that his colleagues could gain new insights which would ultimately benefit patients and save lives.

“We sincerely hope Edel thoroughly enjoys her place on the ATACC course and would like to thank everyone at the College of Paramedics, the ATACC group and Galen for their continued support for the Dr John Hinds scholarship award.”

The College of Paramedics will present the award to Edel at an official awards ceremony later this year.
